I've tried the plugin, but didn't personally like it, as it didn't fit my needs. I've instead written my own which is much cleaner, but only works with telnet and Cisco IOS and Catalyst routers. Granted, it has a lot nicer features, and is simplistic to setup, but does things a bit differently (uses TFTP on the Cacti server, and does a "copy config tftp" command to get it there. Granted, you can create your own device types which run different commands. It also uses a pure PHP telnet class, which means no need for Pancho or anything else.
Its currently in the cacti_plugin SVN, but not released to the world yet.
