Post thold feature request
Hi all

I'm looking to alert on thresholds in a slightly different way to which the current implementation
of thold works:

The current implementation of thold is good for things like disk space/cpu usage/temperature etc. but is not
so good for bandwidth utilisation because I'm not that interested in traffic spikes etc, but am more interested
in overall trends

Instead of allerting on a specific number of breaches of a threshold (like if CPU usage goes over 85% 3 times),
I'm looking to alert when the 95th percentile of the last 30 days goes over a given threshold. This would allow
me to detect which of our ~2500 network links (each 2, 5, 10 or 100 Mbps) should be considered for an upgrade.

The alternative is to use the "preview" mode of cacti periodically to browse each of the network links and pick out the ones
where the 95th percentile is above a given mark on the graph - each graph plots (in addition to the network traffic) the 95th
percentile, and also a horizontal line which represents 60% of the link speed.

Kind regards

I have been pondering kinda something like this for awhile, but in the reports plugin, instead of threshold. While this is a nice idea, the actual implementation is a little tricky and I will have to get it some more thought.

One thing you can do in the mean time is a seperate graph / datasource for the 95th percentile. Create a script that pulls the 95% percentile for the last month for a given datasource, and store that info in its own datasource. Then you could actually threshold off of that number. I'm not really the best at explaining it, but its basically what they were talking about here.
