I will see about adding a "test" link for the email settings with some debug output so you can see exactly why it isn't working. Have you tested using telnet from the Cacti server to port 25 on the email server?

Post phpmailer
the problem is not in the smtp server because with phpmailer it works.
the problem with phpmailer is that i don't have the picture in the mail. so i would try with smtp.

So you receive an email, it just does contain the graph image? Is your mail client able to view HTML emails? I know alot of clients will show the TEXT version instead if you have it set to not show the HTML.

you'r right, i just receive the image in the email with a big "X".
As email client i'm running lotus notes 6.5
i want to try smtp just to be sure that the problem is not coming from phpmail because if i copy and paste the image "manualy" it works fine.
so i ust need to know if i must add a specific software over cacti to send an email with smtp.
thanks

There is no specific software that you will need to send over SMTP. The PHP Class written into the threshold module handles it all, you just have to have a SMTP server that can receive the mail from Cacti. You can find the place to setup the SMTP server under Settings -> Thresholds in Cacti.

Can you forward the email to a different account (gmail, yahoo, ect..) and view it from there to see if you still get the X? The image is attached to the email, and then embedded using HTML (do you see an attachment?). It may be that Lotus doesn't support us doing it that way.

I have fixed several things dealing with the Mailing functions and SMTP, if you could try out the newest version and let me know how it works for you.

Thanks!
